Hints from Fellow Adventurers
- "Do NOT venture into the brush or jungle areas (typically for better views or for picture taking), as there are many poisonous plants lurking there."
- "In order to get used to the altitude (if you stay in Cuzco), the first day should be light walking on your own - gentle exploration of the Plaza de Armas, Temple of the Sun and San Blas areas...taking maybe 1-2 hours at most....then lots of bed rest to get ready for the next day."
- "Sometimes it can be really cold in the train from Cuzco to Aguas Caliente (35-40 degrees with NO heated compartments). Wear layers in order to manage daily changing temperatures. By the time you get to Machu Picchu it might be around a lot warmer and sunny. Carry hats and sunscreen. There are lockers at the entrance to Machu Picchu were travelers can store their warm clothes until they are finished for the day. Ponchos or raincoats are a must, as the very next day at Machu Picchu I awoke to miserable rain and drizzle/mist everywhere. I thanked my lucky stars for the gorgeous first day. Never allow people to go there for only one day, as they could easily lose an experience of a lifetime due to bad, crazy weather they are having with the El Nino at the edge of the Amazon."
